PASOS PROGRAM
We launched the Argentine Hip Fracture Registry
It is a platform that gathers all measurable aspects of patient care for this injury to make data-driven decisions. It will be implemented in a selected group of public and private hospitals and later scaled up nationwide.
Argentina now has the first multicenter registry of hip fractures to improve the quality of care. It is a web-based platform that collects all measurable aspects of patient care for this injury to make data-driven decisions. It was developed by the Trauma Foundation based on international standards with the scientific endorsement of the 11 entities that make up RAFCA* and with the technical and financial support of the Navarro Viola Foundation.
With the support of the Navarro Viola Foundation, Amgen, and Biodisus, a pilot test will be conducted in selected public and private hospitals, followed by nationwide implementation.
Hospitals will be able to improve or innovate in the digitalization, provision, and consolidation of information on hip fractures, gather information to identify patterns, improve patient safety and care, save costs, reduce waiting times in the care process, and access real-time reports (epidemiological, resource utilization, outcomes) and compare indicators with the overall sample.
The implementation of the Argentine Hip Fracture Registry is carried out within the framework of the Pasos Program, a comprehensive data-driven management model and health team training for public and private healthcare institutions aimed at improving the quality of care for patients with hip fractures and promoting healthy and autonomous aging.
The development of hip fracture registries in other countries around the world has shown better outcomes for patients through quality improvement strategies.
The Pasos Program will provide information on the entire care process to:
- Facilitate decision-making.
- Reduce the impact of surgery delays.
- Promote early rehabilitation.
- Prevent specific complications.
- Efficiently use resources and reduce associated costs.
- Develop nationally scoped care protocols.
- Promote prevention strategies based on local information.
- Build the foundation for the implementation of other effective strategies such as
- Fracture Liaison Services (FLS).
- Promote local and international benchmarking processes.
Impact
Hip fracture is one of the most common injuries in people over 60 years old and one of the factors that most impact their health and autonomy. It is estimated that 1.6 million people suffer hip fractures each year worldwide, and by 2050, that number is projected to increase to 6.3 million, according to Johnell O. and Kanis JA in the article “An estimate of the worldwide prevalence and disability associated with osteoporotic fractures,” Osteoporos Int. 2006;17: 1726-33.
Countries that have implemented national-scale hip fracture registries such as Switzerland, the United Kingdom, Spain, Australia, New Zealand, Scotland, and Ireland report that they have reduced mortality and improved other indicators when implemented in conjunction with quality improvement programs.
In Argentina, information is scarce and discontinuous due to the lack of a specific registry. However, this health problem has been identified using data from the Trauma Registry of the Trauma Foundation, which has been implemented for over 10 years in more than 20 hospitals: patients with hip fractures are mostly 70-year-old women, 48% of them undergo surgery, and 13% require blood transfusions.
Due to its social and economic impact and the need for an interdisciplinary and multisectoral approach at the local level, an alliance was formed in 2019 between the Trauma Foundation, RAFCA, and the Navarro Viola Foundation with the aim of creating an innovative solution for Argentina. In addition to the Hip Fracture Registry, we published an article in the American scientific journal Archives of Osteoporosis. To read it, access it here.
