Injuries data collection
Injuries data collection and analysis to save lives
Trauma: a disease more
frequent than you might think
When talking about trauma, we refer to any type of physical injury
caused by an external agent on the human body. The universe of
traumatic Injuries is composed by those arrising from car crashes,
falls, poisoning, electrocution and burns, as the ones resulting
from the lack of heat and oxygen.
.
.
Trauma injuries are more common than we think:
worldwide, they constitute the leading cause of mortality and
disability among people between 1 to 45 years old.
.
Despite this, in Argentina the information on
the matter is limited and insufficient.

World Health Summit 2019
To change this reality, trauma must be recognized as a disease. For this reason, we prepared the document “A call to action for the declaration of trauma as a disease”, which was approved by 46 scientific academies from 37 countries and recognizes trauma as a global disease.
Trauma Program®, our foundational
program
The first step to prevent and control
this disease is to obtain data. To this
end, it is necessary to implement
information systems to collect and
analyze it.
The Trauma® Program is a comprehensive model that collects and analyzes
data related to injuries in order to improve the quality of care and develop
prevention and intervention strategies adjusted to local reality, with the
ultimate goal of reducing the number of trauma victims.
We collaborate with healthcare teams at institutions across the country
to optimize daily practice, identify improvement opportunities and develop
data-driven interventions.

We have 4 lines of work
A pioneering experience in
Argentina’s healthcare system
Implemented in partnership with health authorities, it represents
the first sustainable model of its kind in Latin America, based on
the World Health Organization’s (WHO) guidelines.

Goal
The implementation of the Trauma Program® allows
to have local epidemiological data for:
- Healthcare quality improvement
- Efficient management of available resources
- Production of new knowledge
- Design of evidence-based public policies
- Quality of life improvement of injured people and their environment

For Whom
The information generated by the Trauma Program®
directly and indirectly benefits:
- Community: providing access to a healthcare system organized according to complexity of care.
- Health team: strengthening healthcare practices through specific training.
- Public and private health institutions throughout the country: promoting healthcare quality improvement and optimization of resources.
- Government: facilitating decision making in different areas (security, transportation, infrastructure, education, etc.) and development of data-driven public policies.
- Scientific societies and third sector: generating new knowledge and interventions adjusted to local reality.

Trauma Registry®
We developed the Trauma Registry® to collect and analyze trauma
data. It is a standards-based computer system that integrates a series
of applications that allow the systematization of all measurable aspects
of care, organization of institutions and training of health teams.
This tool also facilitates the identification of local epidemiological
profiles and the recognition of injury occurrence patterns, among
other variables.
Trauma Registry® Features
Data Security and Protection
The Trauma Registry was signed up in the National Registry of Data Bases and complies with policies of quality
and information security in accordance with the Personal Data Protection Law of Argentina (25.326).
100% online
accessible from any device
Simple and user-friendly interface
translation strategy between coding systems
Collaborative structure
access for multiple users within the same environment
Intelligent and up-to-date
real time data, reports and periodic alarms according to specific patterns

The data is obtained from over 35,000 healthcare events registered in the Trauma Registry, which is implemented in 14 hospitals in the province of Buenos Aires, since 2009. The figures represent exclusively the epidemiological reality of the localities and areas of influence of the healthcare institutions incorporated in the Trauma Program Network, and are not representative of other jurisdictions or geographical areas. Therefore, no inferences or projections can be made from the statistical information previosuly presented.
Security and Confidentiality
Fundación Trauma’s Registry System is signed up in the National Registry of Databases of the National Direction for the Protection of Personal Data (No. 70621).
Inclusion criteria
Patients of both genders, of all ages presenting at least one trauma injury and who were admitted by any means to a healthcare institution and required observation and/or hospitalization for a period longer than 23 hours after admission. The data shows the distribution of injuries according to mechanisms of injury included in the International Classification of Diseases, 10th version, of the World Health Organization (chapter XX).
Trauma Network
We work so Argentina may have a National Trauma System,
so that injured patients recibe healthcare attention within the
right place and time.
The experience of over 10 years in alliance with the Province of
Buenos Aires allows us to replicate this model in other jurisdictions,
in order to promote a nationwide network.
Currently, the Trauma Network is composed by 12 emergency systems
and healthcare institutions, which lay the foundations of this federal
initiative.
